Trent Severn Chapter one

The Trent Severn

We are joined by Lucy III at this point with the entire Gervais family, Marc, Sue and daughters Sara and Stephanie. They will be traveling with us too Midland Ontario on Lake Huron, Georgian Bay.

One early advantage we find soon is that both the girls enjoy being with us (I think, or maybe it is just the dogs) giving us a three person crew, making locking much easier

Sarah with Rosie ( I think it’s the dogs.)

The Trent Severn has 45 locks and one rail way lift. The locks vary from over 100 years old to fairly modern giving a complete history of lock technology

Two fairly new locks both are double locks, one at Ranney falls (total lift 48 feet). Second is at Healy Falls, total lift 76 feet. Steel doors leak just like the wooden ones. Lucy III is ahead of us in both locks.

Healy Falls
One of my loves is white pond lilies. When I was young I would go out in the canoe with my dad to find them. There are plenty of them on this trip so I thought I’d share. (Joan)
Stephanie at helm talking to her sister on FSR radio. They would talk in French and Spanish so I never knew what was going on.

All the dogs established their place for different times. When sun was on Port this was Rosie’s place. No one, man or beast, would argue.
Hastings

No pictures of Hastings but a few things that happened. As we were leaving Hastings, Lucy III started slowing down in front of me. Marc was on radio a moment later. He had no power. A loud clunk and then his engine stopped turning. Sue was on deck readying the anchor, we only had 50 ft of navigable water on each side. I called Marc and offered to raft up and hold him in the center of channel. We did that and Marc got on the phone and made arrangements for slips for two and found a mechanic. I was very suspicious that Mark had broken a connecting rod in his engine. Mark talked to several people and all came to same conclusion. Next day he found a crack in the block that was leaking oil. We both searched the internet and the only Atomic 4 to be found in US and Canada was in Baltimore. There was a local mechanic who could put it in but he could not obtain an engine either. The company would not ship to Canada. Arrangements were made to ship engine to Clayton NY Marc would have to pick it up and bring it to Hastings. Later that night Joan and I talked. We had both been wanting to invite the Gervais’ to continue with us but did not want to bring it up till we could talk alone together. Next morning I brought it up with Marc and Sue. A while later they agreed. We left Hastings later that day with plan details still a little vague but ready to give it a try.

3 of the 4 additions to the crew. Now it looks like this crew just sat around relaxing. Not true. It was a pleasure to have them on board. They cook and clean and navigate and pull lines. We shared books and played games together and talked and talked and talked.

With new crew on board went a short distance to Lakefield (no pictures) stayed in a Marina to have AC. Temperatures still in 100s during day and 80’s at night. Had a great time swimming off the back of the boat. Sara and Steffi love to swim, (me too, Joan)
